TRISHA GILSON-DIRECTOR

After facing cancer twice, I’ve learned how often cancer shows no symptoms until it’s too late. I learned how deeply it impacts every aspect of life. Doctors told me I’d forever live with the effects of cancer, from frequent check-ups to ongoing treatments and their side effects. Beyond the physical toll, it’s been an emotional and psychological journey—filled with anxiety, fear, and constant worry about how it affects my family, my job, my finances, and my future. But this experience also pushed me to prioritise self-care, embrace the present, action my bucket-list items, and spend more time with the people I love. It made me reflect on how many people I know who have also faced cancer, and the staggering number of lives it touches. This led to the creation of No One Untouched, in partnership with the BC Cancer Foundation, in 2023.

In 2010, I lost my mom to lung cancer, and in April 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Navigating cancer treatment during a global pandemic, while having to travel outside of our community for screenings, scans, and care, added an overwhelming layer of stress. This experience highlighted a critical need: a local cancer center that focuses on early detection, prevention education, and accessible treatment. The new BC Cancer Centre in Cloverdale, will be a game changer for families in the Fraser Valley, ensuring they can access vital cancer care closer to home without the added burden of long-distance travel.

My mom, Trisha, has bravely battled two unrelated kidney cancers, and through her own experiences, she’s inspired a vision that has become a mission to help others. Together, we’ve been working to support the building and resourcing of the Cloverdale Cancer Centre, a resource that is so critical for families in the Fraser Valley facing their own cancer journeys. Through our fundraisers, we aim to ease the burden of long commutes and provide vital services that support both the mental and physical well-being of patients and their families. I’ve seen firsthand how cancer can impact every aspect of life, and it’s our hope that these efforts bring comfort and hope to those walking this difficult path.
